by | Aug 23, 2024 | 0 comments

Wando Wildlife Removal has had several raccoons tested by DHEC over the last few months and none came back as positive for Rabies. It is most likely that these animals, which were showing signs of disease, had contracted Canine Distemper.

What is Canine Distemper?

Distemper is a viral infection, like Rabies, which is spread from animal to animal and is usually fatal. It shares many symptoms with Rabies including disorientation, fever, abnormal behavior and more.

Raccoons with Distemper will frequently have discharge around the eyes, seizures, extreme thirst, vomiting, and little fear of people.

So what should you do if you suspect a raccoon has rabies or distemper?

First, we recommend keeping a safe distance from the animal and calling the pros at Wando Wildlife Removal. Make sure all pets are up to date on their vaccinations including for Rabies and Distemper. Lastly, if you or anyone in your family was bitten or scratched by a raccoon it is important that the raccoon is captured and tested for Rabies. Fortunately, humans cannot contract Canine Distemper but we can get Rabies. Rabies is always fatal if untreated.
